Frederick R. Taber papers, 1859-1862.

The Frederick R. Taber papers include correspondence, artistic sketches, papers related to Taber's illness, and other writings by Taber. Letters (1861-1862) from Taber at Camp Moore, St. James Parish, and Camp Roman, New Orleans, to his parents and sister, discuss the quality of life at camp; relate his opinions of the officers and other acquaintances; tell of the steady progression of his illness; and mention other family matters. Papers (1859-1862) include correspondence with family members; a poem by Frederick Taber to his sister Lillie; a May 1862 furlough pass granting permission for Taber to travel to Corinth, Mississippi; and a June 1862 statement signed by Eugean Palmer, M.D., certifying that Taber's illness has rendered him unfit for duty in the Confederate States Army. Three undated sketchbooks belonging to Frederick Taber contain drawings of people, landscapes, wildlife, and dwellings.

Frederick R. Taber enlisted in the Confederate States Army in 1861. He served in the 18th Louisiana Infantry Regiment until March 1862, when he was admitted with a chronic illness to a Confederate Army hospital in Jackson, Mississippi. He was sent home to Convent, St. James Parish, Louisiana, in February 1863 and died there the following year. A. F. and Mary Trust were Taber's parents. Lillie Trust was his sister.
